Robin Nelson, the golf course architect, says "our aim at Macquarie Links was to create a links style golf course with an Australian character - hence the name".
The course is very much a combination of links style golf with a heathland or "bush" character. Native grasslands, stands of mature gum trees and unique "outback" site furniture provide strong Australian character. Existing and manmade creeks, lakes and subtle topographic formations all combines to create natural golf holes that ebb and flow with the natural lie of the land.
Hole 1 - OUT
A classic links style hole with a well-protected green. Par or birdie will set the tone for a great round.
Hole 2 - ROAD
A long par 4 needing a long drive in order to reach the green in regulation. Otherwise lay up short. Watch the lake on the right.
Hole 3 - MACQUARIE CREEK
A natural golf hole with a classic small green with roll-off edges. The green is guarded by two pot bunkers. A long iron or fairway wood is a good choice off the tee.
Hole 4 - OLD TREE
A short uphill par 4 with loads of character and challenge. Recovery from behind the green is difficult which may explain the noose sometimes hanging from the tree.
Hole 5 - LONG SHORT
The largest of the par 3s. Downhill with a large generous green which will accept a running shot. An accomplished short game will be useful
Hole 6 - VALLEY
A great short par 4. A slight dogleg following the natural contours with numerous fairway bunkers reminiscent of the famous Scottish Links.
Hole 7 - BOUNDARY
Here a well positioned drive is required. The fierce looking bunkers are not to be feared. An elevated green awaits a birdie opportunity.
Hole 8 - SHORT
A simple yet elegant par 3. A natural hole with only one bunker and generous bail out areas surrounding the green. Just avoid the bunker!
Hole 9 - IN
A tough, demanding hole, the ninth is a suitable closing hole for the outward nine. Remember: stay away from the water.
Hole 10 - OUT AGAIN
A narrow driving hole with a large welcoming green. A good start for the back nine.
Hole 11 - BILLABONG
Most players will require a long iron into the elevated green which is in natural amphitheatre of large gum trees. A drop zone near the green is there for those succumbing to this billabong.
Hole 12 - THREADNEEDLE
You must drive the ball straight on this hole. The fairway is more generous than it seems. Once on the green the putting is uncomplicated.
Hole 13 - BUNBURY
A short hole which requires accurate shotmaking. The best option is an iron or fairway wood of the tee. On in two gives a good chance of a birdie.
Hole 14 - LAKE
A relief after the previous straight driving holes. A wide fairway beckons your driver. Drive left and be careful with your approach shot to avoid three putting.
Hole 15 - SHEEP DIP
The toughest par 3 on the course. The smart play is to put the ball on the right of the green and make two putts for a well-earned par.
Hole 16 - SWING EASY
A classic par 4 which favours a high drive followed by an accurate mid to long iron into the green. With a long bunker on the left and the creek on the right, pars will be cherished.
Hole 17 - RAILWAY
A great penultimate hole. A large eucalypt, bunkers and the creek will make this a most interesting hole. Played confidently, good scores are possible.
Hole 18 - HOME
The clubhouse is in sight as you step onto the tee. A good drive will open the green, but watch the lake. The deep grassy hollow on the right of the green will require good wedge play. A great finishing hole!
